The
Hotel Show, Dubai 2007:SHOWnews Quoted as-
Dr. FAZAL PHONED A
BETTER WAY
Tuesday June 5,2007:Carrying a walletful of
credit cards and loyalty cards prompted mobile communications
specialist Dr. Fazal Raheman to think 'there must be a better
way'.
Now there is - Fonekey, a new system that will use the ubiquitous
mobile phone as a secure means of access to everything from hotel
rooms to cash dispensers.
For the moment, the hotel application is leading the way, but
Raheman is confident that it will soon become the multi-purpose
device that he envisages.
His creative leap was to couple a radio-frequency tag to a mobile
phone, backed by specially-written software , thus providing a
unique secure identification tool.
Fonekey enables a user to book a hotel room to his own specification
online, go straight to the room on arrival to find it ready just
as he had ordered, log purchases during his stay, and leave whenever
he wants - without ever having to visit the ckeck-in desk.
Billing is automatically charged according to the guest's credit
card and loyalty card details.
The system is currently being used in a pilot scheme in India
and will be followed up with a similar trial in France later in
the year. The Hotel Show is its first large-scale marketing exposure
and Raheman is confident that it will transform the way hotel
stay transactions have traditionally been handled.
Fonekey will replace loyalty cards for regular customers, giving
them a new level of convenience while reducing administrative
and production costs for operators.
After making the online booking, the guest receives a PIN number
that he dials on reaching his destination. The phone is then activated
to become a pass key for all transactions on arriving at the hotel.
The system has been under development for more than two years,
and is a joint venture between Indian and US technology, with
company headquarters in New York. US patents have been filed for
the system, described by Raheman as the "the only one of its kind".
"I see this becoming a far better way than carrying different
credit cards and loyalty cards," he says. "The in-built security
is very high, and we will have toll-free numbers to report lost
or stolen phones."
"And there's added security factor in that people always realise
very quickly if they lose their mobile phones - within hours at
the very most. Sometimes, it can be days or even weeks before
they become aware of a missing credit card."
